The court of appeals affirmed in part and reversed in part a district court judgment and remanded. The court held that Alien Tort Statute jurisdiction extends to claims based on conduct occurring outside the United States, including the extraterritorial conduct of corporations.

In the late 1980s, residents of the island of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea engaged in a civil uprising directed at the operations of British-Australian mining corporation Rio Tinto, PLC on the island. The ensuing use of military force to quell the uprising resulted in many deaths.
