SAN FRANCISCO — The chief assistant public defender’s decision to moonlight in an ongoing civil trial will earn him a trip to the woodshed — or worse. Matt Gonzalez, who rejoined the PD’s office last year, violated office policy and ethics rules by handling trial duties while on vacation from his regular city job, according to his predecessor.

His boss, Public Defender Jeff Adachi, said Wednesday that Gonzalez hadn’t told him he would be trying a case, and said he’d “talk to” him when he returns to work. He declined to say whether Gonzalez could lose his job over the flap.
