Even a magnitude 9 earthquake can’t stop Kenton King from closing a deal.

The head of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom’s Palo Alto office and co-chair of the firm’s corporate practice was putting together a hostile takeover for his client, Tokyo-based Advantest Corp., when an earthquake and tsunami struck Japan on March 11, 2011. Seventeen days later, Advantest, the world’s second-largest maker of semiconductor test systems, announced a $1.1 billion agreement to buy rival Verigy. The disaster in Japan was just one of many challenges Kenton and his team faced when putting together the cross-border deal. At one point, there were as many as 100 lawyers working on the deal around the world.
