SAN FRANCISCO — The Recorder won five awards in the California Newspaper Publishers Association’s annual journalism contest Saturday, including first place for its website and first place in the investigative reporting category, for a story on high courthouse construction cost estimates.

The courthouse construction story, by Cheryl Miller, looked at several projects around the state, including plans for a $26 million courthouse in Markleeville, whose 200 residents can see a year go by between jury trials, and why cost estimates for a new facility in Downieville went from $13.5 million to $23 million. Court planners have since canceled both projects and last month said they would revisit more than a dozen others.
