The Savings Accountability and Full Enforcement California Act, an initiative on the November ballot, repeals the death penalty for the future. The abandonment of the death penalty is likely the most important California criminal justice issue seeking the imprimatur of the electorate in 2012.

The arguments in the initiative are trenchant and compelling, not the least of which is the cost savings for conviction, appeal, confinement and execution of those convicted of first-degree murder under special circumstances.
