A San Francisco non-profit legal organization is joining forces with federal lawmakers to push for legislation to protect pregnant women from employment discrimination. In a report to be released Friday by the Equal Rights Advocates, Executive Director Noreen Farrell argues that California’s pregnancy accommodation law is a model the federal government should follow.
The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, introduced Tuesday in the House of Representatives by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and supported by Rep. Jackie Spier (D-CA) and Rep. Susan Davis (D-CA)among others, would require that employers make reasonable accommodations for pregnant women in the workplace, including transferring them to less-dangerous posts or tweaking responsibilities to allow for physical limitations. Farrell said Thursday that ERA worked with Nadler in drafting the language of the bill and released the report in order to support the legislation.
