SAN FRANCISCO — With one order requiring a young criminal defendant to read books and a pair of rulings killing employment class actions, a portrait of the Bay Area’s newest federal judge is starting to emerge.

In her first six months on the bench, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers has ruffled feathers in the plaintiffs bar but happily surprised criminal defense lawyers with a bail ruling quirky enough to garner national headlines.
