SAN FRANCISCO ­­— U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal won’t be getting a promotion anytime soon, but lawyers say vetting is under way for two other district court hopefuls.

Grewal, a San Jose magistrate judge since 2010, had been under consideration by the White House for appointment to the Northern District bench, but word emerged from Washington that President Obama would not nominate him, lawyers familiar with the situation said this week.
