Passions ran high at the California Supreme Court on Wednesday as the court grappled with a death penalty case in which a prosecutor who’s now a Santa Clara County Superior Court judge is accused of misconduct.

The state ripped a retired trial judge, saying he botched an evidentiary hearing into the case. The defense ripped the state, accusing it of sullying the name of a respected judge. Two other justices appeared to get slightly frustrated with each other over letting counsel answer their questions.
