SAN FRANCISCO — It was labor day Wednesday at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, as retired employees of Sonoma County sought to have their full health benefits reinstated and the court sorted out a bitter conflict between Service Employees International Union and some of its former local leaders.

In one courtroom, Judges Sandra Ikuta and Johnnie Rawlinson sounded sympathetic to the retired employees’ argument that county board resolutions referencing retiree benefits over the years created an implied contract.
