SAN FRANCISCO — An Oakland judge received a public admonishment on Wednesday for how he treated an attorney who made a snappy comment in response to him ordering her to “spend every waking moment” working on a case.

The Commission on Judicial Performance said Alameda County Superior Court Judge Morris Jacobson abused his contempt power by requiring criminal defense attorney Anne Beles to stay in his court for around two hours — even scolding her when she walked across the court to pick up her case file — before he held a hearing. He ultimately did not find her in contempt. And the commission said Jacobson abused his authority by telling Beles how to spend her time.
