The court of appeals affirmed a district court judgment and denied a motion for a stay of execution. The court held that a capital defendant could not assert he was denied effective assistance at trial, as a basis on which to excuse his procedural default because of associated ineffective assistance by his postconviction relief counsel, where he represented himself at trial and sentencing according to his own strategy after making a knowing, intelligent, and voluntary waiver of his right to counsel.
