SAN FRANCISCO — Thomas Ostly says a rumor that he raped his legal assistant has all but ruined his legal career.

Although no criminal charges were ever filed and an Alameda County jury considering the sexual harassment claims his assistant brought against him found he had done no wrong, Ostly says the litigation drained him of his life savings and made it impossible for him to continue practicing law — he now works part time as a doorman at local bars, and his bar membership has lapsed.
