SAN FRANCISCO — Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit parent of Wikipedia, wants a judge to declare that El Segundo-based Internet Brands can’t block the foundation from creating a new travel-focused website.

But there’s more at stake than a travel website, Wikimedia claims. The declaratory relief action represents “the full stride of our commitment to protect the Wikimedia movement against the efforts of for-profit entities like Internet Brands to prevent communities and volunteers from making their own decisions about where and how freely usable content may be shared,” deputy general counsel Kelly Kay wrote in a blog post Wednesday, the day it filed Wikimedia Brand v. Internet Brands, 12-523971, in S.F. Superior Court.
