Associate Julie Sherman chairs Hanson Bridgett’s 16-person pro bono committee, and senior counsel Julie Veit is the past chair. The firm partners with the Bar Association of San Francisco’s Volunteer Legal Services Program, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, Legal Services for Children, AIDS Legal Referral Program and legal aid organizations from Marin County, San Mateo and San Francisco. Associates at the firm receive up to 150 hours’ credit toward their billable-hour requirement from pro bono matters.

In two recent matters, Hanson Bridgett attorneys helped individuals get asylum in the U.S. due to harsh circumstances in their home countries. In one instance, the firm represented a transgender person who suffered at the hands of Mexican police due to her sexuality and HIV status. Having been in the U.S. for more than 20 years, she feared returning home. In 2009 — 12 years after deadline — an asylum application was filed on her behalf and attorneys were able to overcome the delay through showing of extraordinary circumstances and health conditions.
