Morgan Lewis’ pro bono efforts are headed by partner Amanda Smith. Partner Scott Karchmer is the pro bono chair of the firm’s San Francisco office and partner Daryl Landy chairs pro bono efforts for the firm’s Palo Alto office. In 2011 Morgan Lewis’ California-based attorneys contributed more than 12,000 hours in pro bono services, with an average of 46 hours per attorney. Every attorney is expected to contribute at least 20 hours to the pro bono practice.
The firm’s California attorneys recently prevented the execution of a Texas death row inmate. Morgan Lewis began representing Cathy Lynn Henderson in 2005, after she’d already spent 10 years on death row for killing an infant whom she was babysitting. After securing expert testimony based on newly available analysis, the attorneys filed a writ on Henderson’s behalf, and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals granted relief two days before her scheduled execution. Following remand, the case is now before the Court of Criminal Appeals.
