SAN FRANCISCO – Unum Life Insurance Co. of America might as well make a bulls-eye its corporate logo.

For years the company has been a frequent target of lawsuits over its handling of disability claims. Seven years ago the California Department of Insurance tried to stop the company from exercising “unfettered discretion” over whether it would pay claims. Even the U.S. Supreme Court has cited a law review article that described the company’s claims procedures as a “scandal.”
