SAN FRANCISCO — Lawyers in the Bay Area and across the country are playing an outsized role in the presidential campaigns by rallying supporters and opening their pocketbooks.

Donating almost $29.7 million, lawyers and law firms gave more to presidential candidates during the 2011-12 election cycle than almost any other job sector, trailing only retirees, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics that reflects contributions through Aug. 31.
