SAN FRANCISCO — John Meihaus Jr. set off a media squall when he “guided” a neighbor’s small dog home with a baseball bat, resulting in the first California appellate ruling allowing emotional distress damages for injury to a family pet.

“This case has generated stories in the San Francisco Chronicle, inquiries from major TV stations in Los Angeles, and has found repeated interest in appellate blogs,” Meihaus’ appellate attorney, Jim Mahacek, noted in a recent filing.
