SACRAMENTO — Lady Justice may be blindfolded, but could you blame her for taking a peek at the headlines every now and then?

After all, every bit of bad state budget news in recent years has translated into painful cuts for the judiciary — $544 million in painful cuts this year alone, to be exact. So it was no surprise that Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye warned those gathered last month at the California Judges Association convention that if Proposition 30, the governor’s temporary tax hike initiative, failed judiciary leaders would “be back in the Capitol fighting to protect” court budgets.
