SAN FRANCISCO — William Gwire may not be accustomed to his reputation being assailed. The legal malpractice expert says he’s handled more than 5,000 cases, has lectured on legal ethics worldwide, authored articles, and has won national awards for the success of his practice. But a defamation suit he’s brought against a disgruntled former client just might create new law that would serve as a warning to lawyers: Market yourself enough, and you become an assailable public figure.

Gwire, of Gwire Law Offices in San Francisco, says Elliot Blumberg, a hedge fund manager he briefly represented, defamed him when he wrote a scathing review of Gwire on the consumer site complaintsboard.com.
