As most anyone who has called for a cab in San Francisco knows, it’s no easy task.

The number of taxi cab medallions, or operating licenses, is tightly controlled by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and it is generally accepted that the number of licensed cabs, just under 1,500, does not meet the city’s needs during peak hours.
