SAN FRANCISCO — Two S.F. civil litigators have emerged as front-runners to fill judicial vacancies in the Northern District.

Shearman & Sterling partner James Donato, a past president of the Bar Association of San Francisco, is currently being vetted by the Obama administration to replace former U.S. District Chief Judge James Ware, who stepped down last fall, say Bay Area lawyers familiar with the nominations process.
