SAN FRANCISCO — U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag’s office is sitting on the sidelines in a nine-count mail fraud case filed this past week against the alleged operator of a $1 million investment scam. But this time, it’s not the sharp elbows of the Southern District of New York or even a Big Law conflict.

The reason for the en masse recusal is because the alleged crime hits close to home for a line assistant. The father of Assistant U.S. Attorney James Mann in Oakland was one of the defendant’s alleged victims.
