SAN FRANCISCO — Times have gotten desperate for the Northern District federal public defender’s office.

And if nothing is done to avert more severe budget cuts, it could be "the effective demise of a valued and respected member of the court family," Federal Public Defender Steven Kalar wrote last week in a letter to U.S. District Chief Judge Claudia Wilken.
