When Chicago-area Abbott Laboratories cast its eye over IDEV Technologies, headquartered in Webster, Texas, as a possible subsidiary, the companies looked West for counsel, tapping teams from Jones Day and Cooley, respectively.

Jones Day is advising the health care giant on its $310 million acquisition of IDEV, a privately held developer of endovascular devices. The transaction, announced Monday, is expected to close by the end of the year. Also on Monday, Abbott announced that it would acquire Sunnyvale's OptiMedica, a maker of cataract lasers, for $250 million upfront and up to $150 million in milestone payments. Abbott declined to disclose legal counsel for that transaction, and representatives for OptiMedica did not respond.
