SAN FRANCISCO — An Oakland judge has dismissed claims for punitive damages in an age bias case against the management of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, dashing hopes of a larger pay-out for older plaintiffs fired from the privatized nuclear weapons lab.

Alameda County Superior Court Judge Robert Freedman sided with the lab's defense lawyers at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe that plaintiffs should not receive punitive damages because they alleged disparate impact, not intentional age discrimination.
