SAN FRANCISCO — Broadcom Corp. tapped a Silicon Valley-based Skadden team for its acquisition of assets from Renesas Electronics Corp.

The Irvine semiconductor giant will pay $164 million in cash for some of Renesas' LTE technologies, which are ready for scalable production, as well as related patents and applications. Broadcom has more than 7,800 U.S. and 3,100 foreign patents and more than 7,700 pending patent applications. As part of the agreement, engineers from Renesas will join Broadcom.
