Top Gear is British TV program that, in addition to reviews of technologically sophisticated automobiles, has a popular segment called "The Reasonably Priced Car." Along with its reports of the driving experiences for Porsche or Jaguars, the show mixes in time-trial laps taken by celebrities in a car whose price is affordable to the average consumer. These celebrities drive this practical car (the most recent was a Kia) hard. With a little practice, these cars can fly around the track. It shows that one can take something simple, but well-designed, and make it work extremely well, even in comparison to high-tech competitors. In today's legal information resource market, is Fastcase the reasonably priced legal research tool that the industry needs?

Fastcase, a provider of electronic access to cases, statutes, regulations, and other miscellaneous resources, is a relative newcomer to legal publishing. Fastcase offers a pared-down website — streamlined in content and price — as an alternative to the two well-established giants, Lexis and Westlaw. While Lexis and Westlaw try to offer one-stop legal research sites, Fastcase offers only the essentials at a flat-rate price.
