SAN FRANCISCO — Two nominees for the Bay Area's federal bench — Shearman & Sterling partner James Donato and San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Beth Labson Freeman — were vetted on Wednesday by a slim contingent of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.

With many senators at a 9/11 remembrance, Donato and Freeman breezed through their confirmation hearing, facing just one question and no sign of opposition. The two were nominated to seats on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California by President Barack Obama in June.
