SAN FRANCISCO — Mobile messaging app WhatsApp Inc. filed a complaint for declaratory judgment in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on Sunday, striking back at a subsidiary of Acacia Research Group that accused it of patent infringement last year.

Represented by Latham & Watkins, Mountain View-based WhatsApp asked the court to find that it did not infringe a patent held by Intercarrier Communications and that the patent is invalid.
