SAN FRANCISCO — During his U.S. Senate confirmation hearing Wednesday, Deputy City Attorney Vince Chhabria explained how he would navigate the shift from advocate to impartial jurist.

Chhabria, a nominee for the Bay Area’s federal bench, and others vying for federal judgeships skated through Wednesday’s hearing with no signs of opposition from members of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. If confirmed, Chhabria, who was nominated by President Barack Obama in July to fill the seat of U.S. District Judge Susan Illston, would be the first district judge of South Asian ancestry in California.
