Four years after it began selling its PlayStation 3 gaming system, Sony Entertainment Corp. of America gave users a choice — download a software update that would eliminate the device’s personal computing capability, or give up access to the PlayStation Network.

Sony says the update was necessary to preserve security, and that once the one-year warranty on the product had run, any adjustment to functionality was fair game. Attorneys for disgruntled buyers say Sony wanted to eliminate the cost of supporting the PC feature, and stuck users with “a $600 brick.”
