SanDisk GC Eric Whitaker never starts with the assumption that outside counsel work is necessary. He wants to foster strong core competencies within his in-house team.

This year, his first at SanDisk, that philosophy proved key: The department took a hard look at its ballooning outside counsel spend, ultimately restructuring its relationships in intellectual property and litigation. Those categories account for 80 percent of its outside counsel expense.
