SAN FRANCISCO — As Silicon Valley companies struggle to beat back a wave of privacy class actions, a case against Apple could offer one of the first glimpses of an important juncture: class certification.

Apple, Google, Facebook and other technology companies have become targets du jour for the plaintiffs bar. But many of the data privacy suits filed so far against Valley tech giants have been knocked out with a motion to dismiss or settled shortly thereafter.
