SAN FRANCISCO — A group of individuals accused of participating in a politically motivated cyberattack on PayPal Inc. pled guilty Thursday to conspiracy and a misdemeanor violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.
The package deal worked out between prosecutors and defense lawyers over months of negotiations provides that 13 alleged members of the hacking group Anonymous will serve no prison time if they keep out of legal trouble for one year. Federal prosecutors had arrested the defendants across several states in July 2011, accusing them of coordinating and executing the cyberattacks in late 2010. Ranging in age from 20 to 42, they allegedly went by online nom de guerre like “Anthrophobic,” “Absolem,” “Ananon” and “Reaper.”
