When it comes to women and minorities, law firms in Northern California buck some depressing national demographic trends.

According to a study released by National Association for Law Placement on Wednesday, the percentage of women associates in law firms across the country has declined for four straight years, while the percentage of minority associates, which plummeted following widespread layoffs in 2009, has made small gains. Yet, in San Francisco and San Jose, the findings point to a more positive story, at least on some measures.
