In an increasingly competitive legal environment, investing in the growth and continued development of associates (and partners) is critically important to a firm’s long-term success and overall excellence. At Sidley Austin, we seek to promote a culture in which both legal and business skills are cultivated and supported. Within the past year, we introduced Practice Development 101, an interactive series launched in the corporate transactions group in the Los Angeles office, to provide a platform for associates to explore client and business development activities that have worked for partners and other senior lawyers who have already “been there and done that.” Ultimately, the goal of Practice Development 101 is to foster an environment where, from day one, lawyers are encouraged to proactively take ownership of, build and navigate their practices.
