SAN FRANCISCO — The prosecution and the defense can agree on one thing about Walter Liew: He was motivated by money.

At the start of a rare economic espionage trial, Assistant U.S. Attorney John Hemann told jurors the defendant’s drive to turn a profit inspired him to steal trade secrets from E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. and sell them to Chinese companies.
