As part of the implementation of the America Invents Act a new category of patent filer was created called a “micro entity.” Qualified filers are eligible for a 75 percent discount on patent office application fees.
Law professor Dennis Crouch of the University of Missouri analyzed 60 patent applications by these micro filers on his Patently-O blog to determine what exactly qualifies as “micro.” Generally an applicant whose income level is less than $150,000 fits the description. However, Crouch pointed out that universities with endowments worth billions, including his own alma mater Princeton, can also qualify for the reduced fees.
