SACRAMENTO — It may not mark a sweeping victory for First Amendment rights, but a federal judge’s recent rejection of a patent holding company’s attempts to out donors pleased lawyers at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

In a brief hearing on March 5, U.S. Magistrate Judge Nathanael Cousins of the Northern District of California granted EFF’s motion to quash a subpoena by Personal Audio LLC for the names of more than 1,000 contributors to the civil liberties group’s challenge of the Texas company’s controversial podcasting patent.
