SAN FRANCISCO — Plaintiff lawyers filed a securities class action against SolarCity Friday, saying the San Mateo-based solar energy company had misled investors with improper accounting.

The suit, filed in San Francisco federal court, said SolarCity acknowledged incorrectly classifying $16.2 million in expenses for 2013, and $20.4 million for 2012. Following that disclosure, SolarCity shares fell almost 6 percent on March 19, allege plaintiffs represented by Los Angeles-based Glancy Binkow & Goldberg.
