SACRAMENTO — If there’s one thing more prevalent than scandals in the state Capitol these days, it’s the plethora of student data privacy bills.

The latest lawmaker to join the protect-the-kids scrum is Alamo Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan. The Democrat and chairwoman of the Assembly Education Committee recently introduced AB 1584, which asserts that student records remain the property of a school or school district even when they’re shared with a private data storage vendor or an educational software provider.
