SAN FRANCISCO — A champion of Black Panthers and Hells Angels, Tony Serra has had his share of controversial clients. His defense of an alleged crime kingpin known as Shrimp Boy kicked off publicly on Thursday with a dose of image rehabilitation.

The famed civil rights lawyer presided over a high-energy rally on behalf of Raymond “Shrimp Boy” Chow, whose long federal rap sheet was topped off last month with money-laundering charges. Chow, political consultant Keith Jackson, suspended state Sen. Leland Yee and about two dozen other defendants have been named in a sprawling criminal complaint that includes charges of corruption, firearms trafficking and murder-for-hire.
