SACRAMENTO — Under increasing scrutiny from lawmakers, regulators and litigators, Google Inc. on Wednesday announced it will no longer scan students’ Apps for Education Gmail accounts for advertising purposes.

Bram Bout, director of Google for Education, also said on the search engine’s blog the company has stopped displaying ads on its student apps. Although such ads had been turned off by default, administrators previously had the authority to switch them on.
