Google Inc. ranked among the top 10 recipients of U.S. patents in 2013, the first time the Internet company has entered the upper tier, according to the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO), which compiles a list of the top 300 U.S. patent recipients [PDF] each year.
Google ranked 10th, but among U.S.-based companies, only International Business Machines Corp. and Microsoft Corp. received more patents last year. Google’s 2,190 patents received in 2013 marked a 90.3 percent increase over 2012.
