SAN FRANCISCO — Michelle Friedland has just taken her seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. But she won’t be in the iconic San Francisco courthouse for long.

To ease her commute, the South Bay resident will have her chambers in San Jose, making her the first Ninth Circuit judge to be stationed in Silicon Valley. Court administrators plan to renovate the San Jose district courthouse’s law library to make room for Friedland, who was sworn in in June.
