SACRAMENTO — Searching for votes in the Senate—and facing a possible veto from the governor—the author of a controversial ride-sharing bill has slashed the insurance coverage levels that Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc. would have to meet under her legislation.

Amendments taken by Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla, D-Concord, to AB 2293 late Friday would require drivers to carry $100,000 for accidents causing death and personal injury, down from $300,000. The legislator also dropped the amount of excess insurance ride-sharing companies would have to provide from $1 million to $500,000.
