SACRAMENTO — Operators of websites and apps used in K-12 schools will be barred from tracking California students for advertising purposes and from selling or amassing data collected about them after Gov. Jerry Brown late Monday signed novel privacy legislation.

SB 1177 will also require tech vendors to maintain “reasonable” data security systems and to delete student information if requested by a school or school district.
