SAN FRANCISCO — Yahoo Deputy General Counsel Kevin Kramer reached out to his friend and outside counsel Edward Reines last June. “I’ve seen all the drama,” Kramer emailed the morning of June 6. “Seems quite overblown to me, but wanted to make sure you’re doing well.”

The drama was the resignation of Randall Rader as chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit over an email he’d sent Reines praising his advocacy skills and declaring himself “your friend for life.”
